El ISBN es un identificador único de 13 dígitos que se asigna a cada edición de un libro. En México lo administra INDAUTOR (Instituto Nacional del Derecho de Autor). Cada formato — Kindle, tapa blanda, tapa dura — es una edición diferente y, por lo tanto, lleva un ISBN diferente.
The ISBN is a unique 13-digit identifier assigned to each edition of a book. In Mexico it is administered by INDAUTOR (the National Copyright Institute). Each format — Kindle, paperback, hardcover — is a different edition and therefore carries a different ISBN.
El ISBN no es lo mismo que el registro de derechos de autor. Son dos trámites independientes, con propósitos distintos.

No. Amazon tiene su propio sistema: un ASIN para eBooks y un ISBN gratuito para los impresos. La pregunta real no es si es obligatorio, sino si conviene a tu proyecto a largo plazo.

Con el ISBN gratuito de Amazon, el editor registrado es Amazon, no tú. Si algún día quieres ese mismo libro en otras plataformas con el mismo ISBN, no puedes: ese ISBN queda atado a Amazon para siempre.
With Amazon's free ISBN, the registered publisher is Amazon, not you. If one day you want that same book on other platforms under the same ISBN, you can't: that ISBN stays tied to Amazon forever.

No directamente. El ISBN identifica, no protege. Para eso existe el registro de derechos de autor, que es un trámite separado. En México, los derechos de autor nacen automáticamente con la creación de la obra.
Not directly. The ISBN identifies; it doesn't protect. For that there's copyright registration, which is a separate process. In Mexico, copyright arises automatically the moment a work is created.
